2021-01-24: Elephants – Little and Large

I felt called to work on some elephant images this week, and as soon as I came across a the first photo I thought a selection of images showing little and large would be just right. I can’t even put into words the magic that I feel when spending time amongst elephants, and a breeding herd is extra special, with the lovely bonds and all the extended family pitching in to help look after the little ones.

I was fortunate to have a huge number of elephants sightings on y last trip and have lots of images to choose from. Which is a good thing, because it is still going to be a long while before I’ll be there again.

This little one was one of the smallest members of the herd, and was heading back to Mom for a suckle. This sighting was during a late afternoon game drive from Chitwa Chitwa in the Sabi Sands.
A tiny elephant calf almost obscured by the low brush, following behind what was probably an older sibling or aunt. This sighting was at Kings Camp in the Timbavati, and we were amongst a large herd of elephants. Every direction we looked from the vehicle there were ears flapping and trunks browsing. Heaven!
A cheeky youngster making itself look very big and imposing by flaring out its ears. Too cute!

2020-12-20: Along the river

The Sabie River flows in front of Tinga Lodge, and on an afternoon game drive, only a couple minutes from camp, we came across a huge herd of buffalo. Some were crossing the river, others lounging in it, and others pausing to take a drink. Mixed amongst them were also a number of elephants. We spent a few moments watching all the action, and then carried on across a wooden bridge over the river.

It wasn’t a remarkable moment on safari by any stretch, but a lovely moment none the less and when I came across the photos today when trying to decide what to work on, they made me smile and remember the warm sun, the dust, the slight breeze and the scent of elephant, buffalo and the plants growing along the river bank.

2020-10-25: Elephants

I’ve come to the end of the photos I flagged from Kenya to revisit, and finish things off with a few of my very favourite animal.

The tree in the background was a favourite of the elephants passing through. They were all stopping to have a good scratch, and if any individual stayed too long, they were given a little to shove to get going from the next one in line, which is what had just happened here.
An evening drinks stop in Selenkay Conservancy, glass of wine in one hand, camera in the other, and a lone elephant having a drink at the waterhole. Of course the time of day and lack of tripod created some challenges, but the image bring back happy memories and that’s all that really matters.

10-12-2020: Monochrome Monday

Part of an enormous herd of elephants seen in the Maasai Mara. We basically just parked the vehicle in a clearing surrounded by fever trees and watched group after group meander by, grazing, finding great scratching post trees and visiting amongst other family groups.

Happiness amongst the elephants 🙂

This bull spent each afternoon around our camp, browsing among the tents and enjoying the waterhole.
