2017-02-17: What I’ve seen this week

I had a call Friday around 5:30 from one of my neighbours, inviting me to come up to their house with my camera, as they had a moose in their backyard! I’ve seen moose a few times before but only for quick glances either while driving, or seeing them disappear into the bushes, so I headed up the road as quick as I could.

For a very large animal, moose are amazingly well camouflaged in and amongst the pines and other evergreens. It was growing dark quickly as well and the moon wasn’t up yet, so getting an awesome shot was out of the question. It was just so nice to be able to spend a bit of time watching the moose graze before it headed off towards the ravine.

I did see the moose again on my morning walk yesterday, but only briefly as it slipped deeper into the trees and completely disappeared within moments. Maybe someday I will be lucky and see one in the daytime and have enough time to get some decent photos.

2017-02-05: What I’ve seen this week

The early part of this past week I had a couple of great wildlife sightings in the neighbourhood, but after Tuesday, nothing at all. Fingers crossed for an interesting week ahead.

20170205_what-ive-seen-this-week — On my late afternoon walk Monday I spotted this barred owl at the top of my road. I managed a couple quick shots before it flew off. It was snowing and quite gloomy, so not an excellent photo, but an exciting sighting for me.

20170205_what-ive-seen-this-week-5 — Tuesday I spotted this fox in the backyard while working. It hung around for about five minutes before disappearing into the bushes.

20170205_what-ive-seen-this-week-2 — Here the fox is investigating the deer bowl. I’ve not seen the deer now in about 3 weeks, since we had our thaw and refreeze. The squirrels, ravens, grey jays and magpies are enjoying the food source though. Soon enough it will be time to put all that away as spring shows up and the bears start to awaken.

2017-01-15: Artistic Impressions

I’ve had another great week of wildlife viewing around home, and I think I have gotten some really nice images, but I’ve been caught up with other projects and haven’t had an opportunity to do any review or editing. So, I’ll have to do a good catch up next Sunday, but for now, I hope you will enjoy a couple of my artistic impressions of the fox that visited last week.

2017-01-08: What I’ve seen this week

As I said in my Feel Good Friday post, this week has been great one for wildlife viewing around the house. The deer have been visiting in force, the flicker, grey jays, hairy woodpeckers, chickadees and magpies are around most days, and the rabbit has been by on more than one occasion.

The special visitor this week though was a gorgeous red fox, who I spotted two afternoons in a row. On both occasions, (s)he was hunting, the second day more successful than the first.

It’s such a joy to look out my office window while working and see all of this unfold!

untitled-6 — I was absolutely blessed with such lovely light the first time I saw this fox in my yard. All day one photos 1/400sec, f5.6, ISO 500.

untitled-5 — I have a path cleared to get to the back of the yard from my shed, and that’s the way the fox took to head off on Tuesday.

2016 Year in Review #5

I decided to take a look back at my most “popular” posts of 2016 – going only by the number of post views; since many of them are from the earlier part of 2016, I’ll be sharing them again over the next few days, along with a new photo related to the the original post.

Coming in at #5 is the post 2016-02-07: What I’ve seen this week. I was lucky to see a pair of eagles during my daytime walk back in February, under lovely blue skies.

The photo below was one that I originally dismissed, but looking at it again, I really like the triangles of light hitting the eye, beak and back, which tie together with all the triangles created with the mess of tree branches.

2016-12-19: Monochrome Monday

Something a little different for today’s Monochrome Monday. During last week’s full moon, the moonrise happened while I was out on my afternoon walk with Spencer. I hadn’t planned on taking any photos, but it looked so lovely rising above a farm in my neighbourhood, I had to try to capture a few quick shots. It was also -28C and standing still for any length of time was not going to happen (neither was spending much time without my mittens on!)

Handheld with a fairly slow shutter speed, I managed to get a clear shot, but it was so dark and noisy, it wasn’t going to work as a traditional landscape shot. So I played around instead, and came up with this interpretation. It’s very dark and moody, but I liked it and thought I would share.

2016-12-18: What I've seen this week

I managed to capture a few photos of some of the local wildlife this week. I hope you enjoy, and have a great Sunday.

20161218-weekly-photots-35-edit — I’ve been seeing this rabbit in the neighbourhood for months, and it makes me sad as it is definitely not one of the regular wild hares, but likely a pet that someone abandoned. During the bitterly cold snap we have been having, I make sure there is some of the feed we leave for the deer accessible for him/her.

20161218-weekly-photots-15-edit — Fluffed up against the -28C temperatures. This flicker spent the day back and forth between the suet feeder and places like this to rest.

20161218-weekly-photots-71-edit — Just like last winter, the deer bowl was empty, so split-ear raided the sunflower seeds I leave out for the birds. And, she’s teaching her young ones the same tricks!

20161218-weekly-photots-59-edit — Four deer were in the yard when it was time for me to fill feeders; they are quite comfortable with me and I knew they wouldn’t go far when I was outside, so I took my camera along and grabbed a few photos. Good thing it had warmed up enough that I only needed gloves on, not mittens. Operating a camera with mittens is just not functional.

2016-12-11: What I've seen this week

***December 12th – I guess I forgot to actually hit post on this yesterday – oops! ***

While I have actually seen quite a lot this week around the neighbourhood, it has mostly been too cold to get the camera out to capture anything while out walking. -22C was the average temperature for my morning walks, and I had to resort to mittens, which don’t lend themselves to quick wildlife shots! The deer and fox have been around a lot, as well as the hairy woodpeckers and lots of chickadees.

For the first time in a long time though, I spotted a northern flicker in the yard, and that is the lone photo of the week (since I could take it through my office window).
